Why to visit Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a birder's dream come true. Although the sanctuary is one of Maharashtra's lesser-known destinations, it is unusual in its setting and scenic surroundings.

The Sanctuary is home to a dense Mangrove forest and thousands of birds, but it is best known for the migratory flamingos who flock to the Sanctuary every year in the spring, as the name suggests. The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is located on the western side of the Thane Creek, an Arabian Sea inlet.

The view of the Sanctuary from the Airoli Bridge is breathtakingly magnificent, with the sky filled with the pink feathers of flamingos set against the picturesque backdrop of the Mangrove forest.

Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, Maharashtra's second Marine Sanctuary, was designated as a 'Important Bird Area and Flamingo Sanctuary' by the Maharashtra Government in August 2015. Migratory birds such as the Lesser Flamingo, Greater Flamingo, Pied Avocet, Painted Stork, and Spot-billed Duck have been spotted in Thane Creek since 1994.

The government established the Mumbai Mangrove Conservation Unit to look after the Sanctuary after becoming aware of the pollution in Maharashtra and how it would disrupt the flamingo migration.
