Visakhapatnam Port is the 5th busiest cargo port in India and the only natural harbor on the east coast of the country. Due to its natural beauty, sea among greens and mountains, it is often regarded as "The City of Destiny '', and "The Jewel of East Coast". The local belief is that the city name comes from Vaisakha, the presided deity of the region, who was worshiped by a king in the 4th century. The History!
The history of Visakhapatnam dates back to the 6th century when it was ruled by the Kalinga Kingdom, Vengi Kingdom, Pallava, and Ganga Dynasty. Between 11th and 12th century, it came under the influence of the Chola Dynasty and later under Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century. In the 18th century, it was under French rule and became one of the major trading capitals of the country. After the Battle of Vizagapatam, the British East India Company captured the city in 1804 and had the ownership until independence. After 1947, it became the largest district in the country and was divided into 3 districts namely, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam.
Historians have found many symbols of Buddhism from the city of Vizag. Pavurallakonda, Bavikonda, Thotlakonda are some of the heritage sites dedicated to the Buddhist religion.
The Culture!
Visakhapatnam is not only the port city but also a city of rich cultural heritage and traditional affairs. Numerous fairs and festivals are held to showcase the authenticity of Vizag and arts and crafts can be proved as a major supplier of public into the city. Dhimsa Dance is a local tribal dance performed by the hill tribes which needs exposure. Musical instruments like Dappu, Mori, and Thuduma are played by the tribal communities which have a sweet melodious tune.
The people of Visakhapatnam believe in faith and religion. Countless number of festivals are celebrated throughout the year. Sankranthi is a 3 day long harvest festival falling in mid January. Chandanotsavam is one of the very famous festivals where the Varaha Narasimha gets detached from the sandalwood paste layers. Lumbini Festival is another uniquely observed occasion to celebrate Buddhism, which continues for 3 days. Visakha Utsav is a 3 day long festival organized by the tourism department to bring out the cultural importance and aesthetics of the city. 1. Rishikonda Beach:
Rishikonda Beach is one of the serene beaches of Vizag, situated only 8 km away from the port. The beach is a treasure of natural beauty and water adventure sports are available.
2. Submarine Museum:
The submarine museum situated at RK beach is the only submarine museum in the whole of Asia. This is a real submarine INS Kurusura and shows the visitors how the warriors lived under water in a very little space.
3. Kailasa Giri:
Kailasa Giri is one of the must-visit places of Visakhapatnam and is located at 360 ft. from the ground. The white idols of Shiva and Parvati are special attractions and people across the country reach here to enjoy the panoramic view of the city.
4. Yarada Beach:
Yarada Beach stays as the perfect not-crowded beach covered with coconut trees, golden sand, and deep blue sea. It is one of the cleanest beaches of India, 15 km from the city and nature lovers fly here to experience the peace.
5. Ramakrishna Beach:
Ramakrishna Beach, commonly called as RK Beach is one of the very popular places and hence is frequently visited by people. It is spectacular to take a leisurely stroll on the seashore and watch the sunset.
6. Borra Caves:
Borra Caves is one of the unique spots in India situated in Araku Valley. It is the deepest cave of the country at 80 meter below and the colourful image formations when sunlight falls on the calcium rocks, is a special sight to behold.
7. Katiki Waterfalls:
Katiki Waterfalls comes under the must visit places when you are headed towards Borra Caves. It is almost 90 kms away from the city and popular among tourists for its natural tranquil environment. The emerging waters after a hectic trek and bamboo chicken on the way is something to experience.
8. Simhachalam Temple:
Simhachalam Temple is the holiest temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the Avatars of Vishnu. It is popular for the intricate carvings and rich works in South Indian style, situated at a height of 800 meters from the sea level.

Lambasingi is the true hidden beauty of Visakhapatnam situated in Araku Valley. It is well known for the sky touching hills, apple orchards, snowfalls, and hence called as "The Kashmir of Andhra Pradesh".
10. Ross Hill Church:
Ross Hill Church is situated atop the central hill of Vizag and has major religious significance. This is the best location to relax and have peace of mind and the panoramic view of the city and port is astounding from here.
11. War Memorial:
The War Memorial is situated just opposite to the submarine museum displaying war materials. It is a tribute to the "Victory at Sea" in the 1971 Indo-Pak war and one can feel patriotism sliding into his veins right here.
