Why to visit Elephanta Caves
Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an example of mediaeval Indian rock-cut art and architecture. The caverns are situated on the Elephanta or Gharapuri island, which is 11 kilometres away from Mumbai. The Elephanta Caves, also known locally as Gharapurichi Leni, are the remains of once-complexly painted artworks.
The Elephanta Caves complex contains two groups of alcoves: the first is a sizable group of five Hindu caves, while the second is a more compact collection of two Buddhist caves. The Shaiva Hindu sect is represented by stone carvings found in Hindu caves. There are other significant sculptures in the caverns, including "Trimurti," or the three-headed Shiva, and "Gangadhar."
