Why to visit Banganga Tank

One of the most sacred locations in Mumbai, this building is also one of the few remaining historical sites in the otherwise concrete-filled city. It is said that the water in the tank has therapeutic properties because it is thought of as a tributary of the Holy Ganges.

According to the myth, Lord Rama, who was on a mission to rescue his wife Sita from the Demon King Ravana's lair in Lanka, discharged an arrow while resting here, causing water to first spring up in the tank.

Today, Banganga Tank is a rectangular pool encircled by steps on all sides. Two pillars with oil lamps, or Diyas, from earlier times exist at the tank's entrance. Despite the sea being so close by, the water in the tank still tastes pleasant. Thousands of people come to this holy tank to bathe in the holy water and present flowers at the Banganga shrine.

The two-day Banganga Music and Cultural Festival, held yearly in the month of February by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, is one of the main draws of Banganga Tank (MTDC).
