Why to visit Ashtamudi Lake
The most visited location in Kollam, which is surrounded by lush greenery and swaying coconut palms, is Ashtamudi Lake, a gateway to the backwaters. The Neendakara estuary allows this second-largest lake in Kerala, which is 16 km long, to empty into the Indian Ocean. Tourists from all over the country and outside travel to this natural paradise to see one of Ashtamudi's many splendours since the location is so stunning. Many visitors come here to take a boat trip, which offers a view of village life, a natural environment, and a wealth of vegetation. Eight waterways converge to this lake, which is recognised for its panoramic beauty.
The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) Kollam provides the boat trip here. One of the most well-known and lengthy backwater excursions in Kerele is the one that runs between Kollam and Alappuzha, which is frequently taken by visitors. You will get a wonderful experience of the gorgeous coconut fields, palm trees, red cliffs, and more during this magical eight-hour excursion. The Kallada River, which originates from the meeting of the Kulathupuzha, Chenduruni, and Kalthuruthy rivers, is the principal river that empties into the Ashtamudi.
Another draw of Ashtamudi Lake is the well-known Chinese fishing nets that are spread out across the water. These nets, known as Cheena Vala, once had connections to China. Between August and March, when the weather is ideal for a boat ride and the temperature is moderate, is the greatest time to explore this gorgeous location.
