Why to visit Karni Mata Temple

The Karni Mata Temple is especially notable for its architecture, which is influenced by Mughal construction techniques. The lovely temple is endowed with a magnificent marble facade and marble carvings, which add to the allure of the location.

The fact that 25,000 black rats live in the temple and are venerated is what makes it unique. In fact, the food they consume is regarded as holy and is later served as 'prasad.' The sacred rats are known as kabbas, and pilgrims from all over the world go considerable distances to pay their respects to them at the temple. The temple and the rats who live here are the subject of many stories and traditions, but no one knows the exact origin of this peculiar monument.

If a rat is accidentally killed, it must be replaced by one made of solid gold as a kind of atonement. Spotting a white rat is regarded particularly lucky, and people may be spotted all over the place luring the white rats out of their holes with various goodies.

Special Tip

Visiting the temple in March-April, or September-October, when the fairs and festivals are in full swing, is the best time to do so. However, anyone can pay a visit to the temple at any time to offer bhog and seek the goddess's blessings.
