This statue is thought to be the country's tallest and also the first Buddha to be placed. The figure is commonly referred to as the "80-foot statue" by the locals.

The fourteenth Dalai Lama dedicated the statue on November 18, 1989. It was built purely for the purpose of preaching Buddhism and spreading Gautama Buddha's teachings.
