Why to visit Cankamana
As part of the Mahabodhi Temple, Cankamana is one of the most revered shrines. It is thought to be the path Buddha took during his third week of meditation. This is also where Buddha practised walking meditation, and as a result, it was given the name Cankamana.
The location represents Buddha's footsteps carved out as lotuses in black stone. These flower-decorated steps can be seen on the right side of the road. Thousands of monks flock to the site to chant in Buddha's honour, creating a strange and relaxing ambiance. In addition, the shrine contains several other miniature images of Buddha and his disciples. Visiting Cankamana after sunset will allow you to observe the pathway, which is beautifully decked with flowers and candles. The atmosphere generates an awe-inspiring impression in your mind that will last a long time, making it a must-see site.
