Why to visit Nohkalikai
The Nohkalikai waterfalls, which are only 5 kilometres from the main town, are one of India's highest waterfalls. This waterfall, which cascades down from a height of 1100 feet, is one of Cherrapunji's most renowned tourist attractions. You may get a panoramic picture of the Nohkalikai waterfall, which cascades down into a pool-like structure, by driving through a high tableland and hiking for a short distance.
The naming of this waterfall has a melancholy backstory. In the Khasi language, Noh Ka Likai means 'the leap of Likai.' Ka Likai was a widow who had a daughter from this marriage, according to legend. She remarried so that her daughter could have the affection of a father, but her new husband despised her since Ka Likai devoted all of her time to her child. He once slaughtered a little girl and cooked her meat as dinner while she was gone at work.
When Ka Likai returned home from work, she was surprised not to see her daughter, but grateful that her husband had prepared a lunch for her. She loved the dinner, knowing that her daughter would be out playing. Her daughter's fingers were found in the betel nut basket later when she picked it up. She rushed to the edge of the cliff, filled with regret, anguish, and grief, and threw herself over. As a result, the fall was given the name Nohkalikai after her Nohkalikai waterfalls.
