Why to visit Mawlynnong Village
Mawlynnong, one of India's cleanest villages, is around 92 kilometres from Shillong. In 2003, it was named the cleanest village in Asia, and in 2005, it was named the cleanest hamlet in India. Locals refer to the village as "God's Own Garden," and it is praised for its community-based eco-tourism effort.
Every person is responsible for keeping the hamlet clean, and bamboo waste containers dot the alleyways, nooks, and corners of Mawlynnong to encourage cleanliness. The waste collected in the bins is transported to a pit where it is converted into manure. Smoking and the use of plastic are both prohibited. Rainwater harvesting is highly valued and practised by practically all of the city's citizens. Furthermore, the village has a 100% literacy rate, and the majority of the residents are fluent in English. It offers a panoramic view of Bangladesh due to its location on the Indo-Bangla border.
Another reason to include this location on your itinerary is the natural rock balancing phenomenon that may be viewed here: one boulder perched on top of another. A trip to a single-decker live root bridge is also available for visitors.
