Why to visit St. Lawrence Market
The St. Lawrence Market, located in Toronto's Old Town, is a historic food market that dates back to the early 1800s. Come to the market to experience the hustle and bustle of a classic fresh-food market, try everything from fruit to seafood, peruse exhibitions and antiques, and hone your culinary talents. Three buildings house the market, which offers a wide variety of goods and cookery workshops. It's no surprise that the market was named the world's best food market by National Geographic in 2012.
The North Market building is known for its Farmers Market, which began in 1803 on this location. Traders from Southern Ontario came to sell fruit and vegetables, baked goods, sausages, and cheeses, among other items. Arrive early to have the finest selection. On a Sunday, you can visit the stalls of roughly 80 antique sellers. Keep an eye out for collector's goodies; you may come across some real gems!
On any given day, the South Market building hosts roughly 120 sellers on two floors. Bakeries, seafood stands, and vendors selling homemade jams and pickles, as well as Toronto's famous Peameal Bacon sandwiches, may all be found here. The Market Gallery is located on the second floor. The changing displays depicting Toronto's cultural and socioeconomic transformations are well worth seeing.
