Why to visit Shivalik Fossil Park
This park is the first one in Asia to be located on the actual fossil excavation site. It is home to a variety of vertebrate skeletons and fossils from ancient times. It was retrieved from the sandstone and clay geological strata of the upper and middle Siwaliks at Shivalik.
The fossil park is well-known for its museum that showcases fossil discoveries as well as its outdoor exhibition of six life-size fibreglass replicas of prehistoric mammals whose skeletons and fossils were discovered nearby.
Researchers from around the world who come to the park to do study can also do so with the help of the park. They are crucial in spreading knowledge about this area of research and inquiry in the general public.

• The fossils that were discovered in Shivalika Fossil Park were identified as being from a time period of about 2.5 million years ago.
• The mammalian fossils that were discovered in this area are among the richest ancient artefacts in the entire globe.
• You can view six fibreglass replicas of extinct animals before entering the museum, including a massive tusked elephant, a gharial, a colossal land tortoise, a four-horned giraffe, a saber-toothed cat, and a hippopotamus.
• The other fossils discovered in this area include a six-toothed hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon Sivalensis), a saber-toothed tiger (Paramachaerdus), and a gigantic elephant (Stegodonganesa Sivatherium).
History of Shivalik Fossil Park :-
The Geological Survey of India, in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh government, created the Shivalik Fossil Park on March 23, 1974. They currently supervise the construction of this park.
The park is called after Shivalik Village, where it is housed, because the fossils were discovered here, in the Markanda River valley, at the base of the Himalayas.
