St. Francis Church in Kochi, which features exquisite Portuguese architecture, is thought to be unique among all the European churches built in India. It was built by Portuguese merchants in the 15th century. When the famed explorer Vasco-da-Gama died in 1524, during his third expedition to India, he was buried in this cathedral. After fourteen years, his bones were transported to Lisbon, but his monument remains in the chapel.
