There is a woman who was insistent that she would only wed the All-Powerful, Lord Shiva, at the southernmost point of the nation. She made the choice to elevate herself to the level of Lord Shiva. She made a deadline for the day the Lord Shiva would arrive for her, and she also made the decision to commit suicide if the Lord Shiva did not appear by then. When Lord Shiva learned of this, he went in search of her, but a plot prevented him from finding her, so the woman committed suicide. She is thought to still be present in Kanniyakumari, the site of the virgin temple.
The Lord Shiva sought a location to let go of his sorrow after failing to reach her in time. The Velliangiri hills were climbed by the Lord Almighty, who then descended to its peak. He arrived here in a state of some combination of rage and depression, thus he was unable to sit in bliss or in meditation. He stayed there for a long time. People refer to the Velliangiri hills as South Kailayam since that is the name given to the location where Lord Shiva used to sit, known as Kailayam.
