Why to visit Chunar Fort

Built in 56 BC, Chunargarh fort is also known as Chunar Fort. For those who enjoy architecture, this fort is a well-known tourist destination. This fort is popular among young people who visit for the thrill due to the numerous paranormal legends associated with it.

Architecture: 

  • The fort is located 85 metres above sea level on a rock that is a detached portion of the Vindhya Range. 
  • A series of low hills that run parallel to the river's right bank and are surrounded by plantations and bungalows define the approach to Chunar Hill.
  • In the northeastern section of the fort, the Citadel, which is the principal building, was equipped with numerous cannons and a gunpowder stockpile.
  • It also features a jail and a well known as "Maut Ki Kuwan" (death well) , which is incredibly deep. There is a tunnel with stairs in front of the jail cells that allegedly meets the Ganges river.

Best features of the fort: 

  • Bharthari Samadhi: the final resting place of Vikramadhitya's brother. It is close to the tunnel.
  • Sonwa Mandap: The princess's palace, renowned for its arch, water storage tank, and other features. It was once said to be filled with gold. 
  • Warren Hastings' residence: A museum known for its sundial, stone umbrella, and other items.
  • Bawan Khamboki Chhatari: An open pavilion with 52 pillars to commemorate the king's 52 victories. 
  • Dargah of Shah Qasim Sulaimani: A tomb located to the southwest of the fort. Jahangir had him imprisoned in the fort and his devotees later constructed a mausoleum for him.

Interesting Facts:

  • Due to its depiction in the book "Chandrakanta," the fort, which is located on the banks of the Ganga River, is also known as Tilismi Quila or Magical Fort.
  • A number of the most well-known films, like Gangs of Wasseypur, were also filmed here.
  • Chunar Fort is also well-known for stone trading due to its location in Kaimur Hills, the only place in this region known to produce high-quality stones.
