Why to visit Parliament Hill

On a hill overlooking the Ottawa River in Canada's capital, the historic neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings have pride of place. Come see how the country's legislators conduct business. The House of Commons is sitting in a lovely glass-roofed former courtyard in the West Block while the Centre Block is closed for renovations, and the Senate is debating in a stately Beaux-Arts-style building—originally a train station—just one block from Parliament Hill. In the summer, you can also visit the East Block to observe reconstructed historic spaces that seem like they did in the late 1800s.

As the physical embodiment of Canada's government, the Parliament Buildings play an essential symbolic function. The exterior image of the Centre Block and its Peace Tower is the most visible manifestation of this symbolism, but the entire ensemble is obviously associated with the nation's capital, especially because it is not an architectural image established elsewhere in the country.
