Why to visit Fort William, Kolkata
Fort William is a magnificent structure located on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River in Kolkata. The fort was built in 1696 and is named after King William III. It was the British's first foothold in the country.
The beautiful structure spans 70.9 acres and features hundreds of arched windows that gaze out over lush green gardens. The building's surface is adorned with meticulous stonework, which took up to ten years to complete. However, it was quickly apparent that the structure had a few flaws, and a new octagonal structure was built, with Sir Robert Clive laying the foundation.
Fort William has served a variety of objectives throughout its history, each of which was diametrically opposed to the next. It was called as 'the black hole of Calcutta' because it originally consisted of wings and an inner bastion where criminals were transported.
Inside the fort is a 9 hole golf course. The fort, which is owned by the Indian Army and serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Army Command, now has a boxing stadium, a swimming pool, a firing range, restaurants, an outdoor playground, a shopping complex, laundry, a movie theatre, and a post office. Aside from that, there is an Arsenal.
