Why to visit Vijayaragnava Perumal Temple
Lord Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple is a site of worship in Kanchipuram dedicated to Lord Vijayaraghava Perumal. This magnificent temple is the 57th of Lord Vishnu's 108 Divya Desams. It was constructed during the reign of the Pandya monarchs in the 13th century.
The era in which the temple was built is shown by inscriptions on its walls. The temple architecture is comparable to that of Kanchipuram's traditional temples. The Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple complex comprises two shrines, one for Vijayaraghava Perumal and the other for Margathavalli Thayar, the principal deity. Standing between Sridevi and Bhudevi, facing east, is the idol of Vijayaraghava Perumal. Jatayu can be seen resting on his thigh.
According to tradition, when Ravana kidnapped Sita, the King of Birds, Jatayu fought Ravana in an attempt to liberate Sita, but was unsuccessful. Looking for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana arrived at the location where Jatayu lay injured from the struggle. He told them what had happened and asked for them to be blessed by Viswaroopam, his gorgeous form.h.
