Why to visit Istanbul Archeological Museum

It is Istanbul's most stunning historical site, bringing together a one-of-a-kind collection of Turkish and Middle Eastern antiques and sculptures. The Archeology Museum is the largest of the three divisions, with the Tiled Pavilion of Mehmed the Conqueror and the Museum of the Ancient Orient being the other two. On the exhibition, you'll find a plethora of artefacts from Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine, and Hittite civilizations.

It was founded in 1875 by a renowned painter, Osman Hamdi Bey (whose famous Tortoise Trainer painting may be seen at the Pera Museum), in response to the relocation of many of Turkey's ancient antiquities to European museums.

The most convenient way to reach there is to take the tram to Gulhane, from where it is only a short walk.

Special Tip

The Istanbul Archaeology Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. At 6 p.m., the last entry (ticket kiosk) closes. The museum is open every day of the week. The cost of admission is 60 Turkish Lira per person, but users of a Museum Card get in for free.
