Why to visit Topkapi Palace

This magnificent castle, which served as the Ottoman monarchs' administrative section, is one of Istanbul's most visited sights. The Ottoman Imperial Harem and the Sultans' Treasury are the two most popular visitor attractions in the palace. The world-famous Spoonmaker's diamond and the Topkapi dagger are kept here! Armor, apparel, and manuscripts from the 15th and 16th centuries are among the lesser-known but equally exquisite objects discovered here! It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its age, beauty, and the volumes it contains on the life of the Ottoman empire's flamboyant sultans.

Topkapi Palace, in Istanbul, Turkey, is a colourful and picturesque reminder of Turkey's erstwhile Ottoman Empire's splendour. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror erected it in 1459, and it literally means "Cannon Gate" in Turkish. It was extremely important in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the Sultan and his concubines utilised it. Even now, the Imperial Harem is one of the most popular attractions in town! When the Ottoman Empire fell apart, the authorities turned Topkapi Palace into a museum, evoking the glory days of the Ottoman Empire.

The travel to this palace is 50 kilometres long, and it takes about 40-45 minutes to get there by taxi or Uber from Istanbul airport. It costs around Rs 1500 and is the least inconvenient mode of transportation. Alternatively, go 250 metres to Istanbul Havalimani and take a bus to Sultanahmet from there. Walk 400 metres from Sultanahmet to Topkapi Palace, which will take around 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Special Tip

Since it is closed on Tuesdays and has a big line on weekends, Topkapi Palace is best visited in the mornings on Mondays and Thursdays. Because the Blue Mosque opens at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, there is a sizable crowd even on Friday morning. The entry fee for this palace is 72 Turkish Liras, which is waived for children under the age of eight.
