Why to visit Galata Tower

Galata Tower is one of Istanbul's and Turkey's most renowned tourist attractions. This centuries-old mediaeval landmark stands tall in the heart of the capital, offering sweeping views of the city. It is also known as Galata Kulesi in Turkish, and it is one of Istanbul's oldest and tallest skyscrapers. Galata Tower is a nine-story building with a 67-meter height. Visitors can reach the 7th floor via two elevators. To get to the observation deck, you'll have to climb two flights of stairs. Step out onto the balcony, wander around the pinnacle of the tower, and take in the breathtaking panoramic 360-degree view of the city. On the upper floors of the building, there is a restaurant and a cafe where you can enjoy your meal while taking in the breathtaking views of the city.

A restaurant and a cafe are located within the tower and may be reached via the elevator. In addition to the ticketing centre, there is a souvenir shop. You'd have to take a life and then walk three flights of steps to get to the top for a panoramic view of the city. The cafe has a really peaceful and lively ambiance, and you may have your favourite drink while taking in the greatest view of Istanbul.

The original tower, known as the Tower of Christ, was constructed in 1348. (Christea Turris). The tower operated as a watchtower because it was the highest portion of the defences around the Genoese castle of Galata. The tower was used as a prison and a naval store after the Ottoman takeover of Istanbul in 1453. It was used as a fire lookout post in the nineteenth century to promptly identify regular fire outbreaks in the city's mostly wooden houses.

To get to Galata Tower, either take an old red tram (the usual tram service) from Taksim to Kabatas and then take a modern tram to Karakoy-cross via Istiklal Caddesi, or take a funicular train (specially built for tourism purposes) from Taksim to Kabatas and then take a modern tram to Karakoy-cross via Istiklal Caddesi. If you prefer to commute by metro, a metro train from Taksim to Sishane is available.

Special Tip

The entrance charge to the tower is 35 Turkish Liras, although it is free for children under the age of seven. Make sure to bring your binoculars with you so you can enjoy the finest view of the ancient town and the surrounding buildings.
