Why to visit Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Idukki Arch Dam, about 2 km from Idukki Bus Station.The Sanctuary occupies a total area of 77 square kilometres in the taluks of Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola. The sanctuary was built in 1976 and is located between the Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers in a forest at a height of 450–748 metres above sea level.
The sanctuary's landscape is made up of high hills, valleys, and mountains. This wonderful wildlife sanctuary's picturesque attractiveness is enhanced by the man-made Idukki Reservoir (Kizhakkilachimala Lake).
In addition to a variety of snake species like cobra, viper, and krait, the sanctuary is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Idukki. It is home to elephants, bison, sambar deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tigers, and wild boars. Birds include myna, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, kingfisher, and jungle fowl, among others.
