Why to visit Calvary Mount
The prominent hillock and Christian pilgrimage destination known as Kalvari Mount is situated 5 km outside of the city of Idukki on the Kattapana-Idukki Road. The viewpoint, also known as Kalyanathandu, is positioned at a height of 20 metres and offers breathtaking dawn and sunset views. Additionally, you'll be mesmerised by the breathtaking panoramic views of the lovely valley below and the Idukki Dam. If you're fortunate, you might even be able to see elephant herds taking a dip in the lakes below. The mountain's elaborate ceremonies of Good Friday and Lent are its main attraction.
However, the hilltop has an extremely steep slope and is often scaled by experienced trekkers. It is advisable to only climb to the top on foot because the road is rough and the rocks are largely slippery. However, if you are a skilled driver and own an SUV, you can choose to pull up. Your vehicles can be parked on top if necessary. In addition, Kalvari Mount is a well-liked location for picnics. You might also decide to remain longer and take in the fantastic views of the nearby lush forest and the valley. You can spend the night in one of the two cottages that the forest department manages at the mountain's foothills.

Special Tip
Because there are many rocks that are slippery and present a risk on the upward slope, it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, ideally sports shoes. As the hill is extremely steep and perilous, it is advisable to ascend on foot rather than by car. Keep in mind to bring some snacks and drink with you since there are no stores on the top.
