Why to visit Monastiraki

This is the location to go in Greece for full-fledged shopping. There are scores of stores lined up along the streets offering anything and everything under the sunlight. You can find everything here, including handcrafted ornaments, a range of textiles, records, apparel, footwear, homemade objects, and many other local products. On weekends, the location hosts a flea market where you can find genuine antiques at bargain prices.

The Melissinos store is one place to get your sight. This is a classic shoe store that specialises in custom-made, handcrafted leather boots. Numerous famous people have gone to the cobbler to get a pair of shoes made for them. Sophia Loren, John Lennon, and Sarah Jessica Parker are among their many pleased customers.

Many of the structures that make up Monastariki Square are hundreds of years old. The Tzistarakis Mosque, which dates from the 17th century, is a must-see. It is a reminder of Athens' Ottoman domination.

Special Tip

It is commonly used to haggle in this area. Prepare to argue with the first price you're given. Monastiraki's market is a little touristy. Among the tat, though, there are some jewels to be unearthed.
