Why to visit Sistine Chapel

People are eager to see this architectural marvel with their own eyes. The chapel was named after Pope Sixtus IV of the Della Rovere family, who commissioned it. During Pope Sixtus IV's reign, this chapel was constructed between 1473 and 1481. While the outside is magnificently designed, the interior of the chapel is surrounded by some of the most valuable and rich elements, providing the perfect historical touch.

A beautiful pavement can be found near the entrance, as well as a magnificent frescoed ceiling by Michelangelo. The chapel's exterior gives the impression of a defensive structure guarding historical masterpieces. The Chapel's restoration began in the 1990s, demonstrating the artist's incredible technical mastery. In modern times, the Sistine Chapel is regarded as the site of the conclave, in which the college of Cardinals elects a new Pope. Learn more about this incredible architecture that shaped Rome's history in the best way possible.

The interior of the Chapel contains some of the 15th century decoration of the walls, which is decorated with false drapes, stories of Moses and Christ, and Pope portraits. Along with that, the chapel has some of the most beautifully painted architectural features, including a cast of biblical characters depicting stories from the book of Genesis.

Special Tip

It is best to visit the Sistine Chapel early in the morning or after 4 p.m. for the best experience. During this time, the Vatican Museum will be crowded with visitors, while the Chapel will be less crowded. It is best to avoid going on Wednesday mornings and Saturdays.
