Why to visit Neelkantha Mahadeva
This revered temple is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for all Lord Shiva worshippers, located about 30 kilometres from Rishikesh. It is close to the Nar-Narayan mountain ranges and is surrounded by thick forest. The temple is located between the Manikoot, Brahmakoot, and Vishnukoot valleys.
Architecture
- The outside of the majestic temple displays the Samudra-Manthan narrative.
- At the temple's entrance, a life-size statue of the goddess Parvati and a Shiva lingam are housed in the sanctum sanctorum.
- Devotees typically take a holy wash at the natural spring before entering the temple grounds, which is another feature of the temple complex.
Festivals
The temple hosts two annual fairs, Maha Shivratri (February/March) and Shraavana Shivratri (July/August), during which devotees (Kawarias) trek from Haridwar to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. Visitors to Neelkanth Mahadev send Lord Shiva offerings of bael leaves, coconut, flowers, milk, honey, fruits, and water.
Legends
It was here that Lord Shiva drank the lethal Kalkut Vish (poison obtained with thirteen other treasures by churning the sea). Because the poison turned his throat blue, he was given the name Neelkanth.
