Why to visit Agnitheertham

The Agnitheertham, one of Rameshwaram's 64 sacred baths, is one of the most revered theerthams and welcomes a lot of visitors daily. The only theertham situated outside the temple compound is Agnitheertham, which is situated on the seashore side of Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple.

The words agni and theertham in Sanskrit both signify fire and holy water, respectively. Ancient writings and mythological tales frequently refer to Agnitheertham as a Hindu pilgrimage that is of great significance. Visitors to the theertham offer prayers to the deity and bathe in the sacred waters to wash away their sins.

History of Agniteertham :

This theertham is connected to two legends. In accordance with the first narrative, Lord Rama atoned for his sin of murdering the demon Ravana, who was half Brahmin, by bathing in the holy water of Agnitheertham. According to the second legend, Goddess Sita had to pass through Agnipariksha on her journey back to Ayodhya with Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana in order to demonstrate her virginity to the latter. She was sitting in the fire, but she was unharmed. However, Lord Agni thereafter had to take a bath in the sea and make prayers to Lord Shiva in order to atone for his sin of touching Goddess Sita during the Agnipariksha. Agnitheertham is the name used nowadays for this location.
