The Mahachaitya Stupa was built in the second century, and the name Amaravathi is claimed to have been taken from the temple of Amareswara Swamy. Amaravathy is a historically significant town. It was the mediaeval capital of the Satvahana kingdom. It is also a significant Buddhist historical site. Every day, a large number of people visit the Mahachaitya Stupa.
