Sung Sot Cave, also called "Surprise Cave," is one of the biggest and most impressive caves in Halong Bay. It is located on Bo Hon Island and consists of two major halls. The first hall is wide and filled with more rock formations. Deep inside, the second one is much larger, with high ceilings and colorful stalactites hanging from the roof.

Caving is an unforgettable expeience here as the cave is very well-lit. It is walkable and not so difficult to explore. The cave is millions of years old. Its formations are the result of natural forces working over time. Here's what you can expect:

1. Explore the Cave

  • A stone way leads deep inside the cave. As you walk, you will see some animals and objects formed of rocks.
  • It looks just like an ancient king's throne, a horse, and a turtle. Inward lighting helps these rocks reflect colors, thereby presenting a wizard-like effect. 
  • It is cold inside and ventilated, and the experience would not be exhausting at all.

2. Ride up to the Viewpoint

  • You will be required to ascend approximately 100 stone steps just to get a glimpse of this cave.
  • It would be a strenuous exercise in a way, but the view you get at the top is definitely worth it. You may be able to see the beautiful emerald-green waters of Halong Bay and the white limestone islands quite far away. 
  • It is great for photography purposes.

3. Know The History of This Cave

  • Local legends say that this cave was a hiding place for ancient warriors. It is said that once, a dragon dwelled here; the stalactites are proof of the existence of a dragon. You will hear some interesting stories while you go along with your guides.
