Why to visit Sivagiri Mutt
When you enter Sivagiri Mutt, you will be drawn in by the mutt's unusual multi-tiered white terraces. In 1928, it is thought that the social reformer Sree Narayan Guru passed away. It was Sree Narayana Guru's home during his lifetime, and it now houses his Samadhi and personal belongings following his death.
Sree Narayana Guru was a great admirer of Varkala's natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, therefore in 1904 he established a hermitage on the top of the Sivagiri hill, which later became a prominent pilgrimage destination. The Travancore State Government thereafter offered the Guru Sivagiri Hill. Not only that, but some locals in the area offered him land. As a result, Sivagiri became the hub of all Sree Narayana movements.
In addition to Guru, several social reformers such as Dr. P. Palpu and the famed Malayam poet Kumaran Asan aided in the establishment of the Mutt at Sivagiri. They were ardent Guru disciples who had brilliant ideas for reclaiming society. Guru established an elementary school in this area with these considerations in mind. In reality, a night school for illiterate persons of lower caste was formed. When his followers wished to build a temple here, the Guru dedicated it to Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge, and thus Sivagiri Saradha Temple was built in 1912. It was developed by Guru himself and is shaped like an octagon.
