Why to visit Shore Temple

During Narasimhavarman's rule in the seventh century CE, the Pallavas constructed Shore Temple. One of the earliest Dravidian-style temples in South India, it captures the regal aesthetic of the Pallava dynasty. As a member of the "Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram," it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Granite building stones were used to construct the Shore Temple. Because it looks out over the Bay of Bengal, it has that name. As opposed to the other monuments at the location, which are all rock-cut, the Shore Temple is a Hindu temple with five stories. The oldest significant structural temple in Southern India is this one. Its 60-foot-tall pyramidal construction rests on a 50-foot-square platform.

The old porch is now replaced by a modest temple. One of the best sites to visit in Mahabalipuram, it is said by folklore to be one of the Seven Pagodas. Three shrines make up this temple, two of which are devoted to Lord Shiva and the third to Lord Vishnu.
