Originally, the territory was under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Lahore. Following partition in 1952, the Catholic Mission of the Indian state of Punjab was elevated to the level of apostolic prefecture, with its headquarters in Jalandhar, and was handed over to the British province from the Belgian province of Capuchin missionaries. The church in the cantonment of Jalandhar was designated as Punjab's mother church.
