Why to visit Ita Fort

Itanagar's Ita Fort was constructed in the 14th or 15th century. It is said that the fort itself gave the city of Itanagar its name. Ramachandra, a monarch of the Jitari dynasty, constructed the fort in an atypical shape.

It is estimated that 80 lakh bricks were utilised to build the fort's structure. Brick ramparts and natural ridges surround the fort. There are three gates, two brick walls, and brick ramparts on the western and eastern sides.

The eastern rampart is over half a kilometre long and has just one gate, whereas the western rampart is over 1.40 kilometres long and has two gates. Uneven, high ridges that extend more than a kilometre in length may also be seen to the north and south of the fort.

In the Ahom language, brick is referred to as "Ita," which is where the name comes from. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Museum in Itanagar, some of the fort's archaeological discoveries are preserved.
