Planning Toolkit

Summer

From July to August, Hawaii's summer season sees a slew of visitors flock to the island's beautiful beaches. Temperatures range from the low to mid-80s during the day, to the high 70s during the evening.

Winter

Rainfall is strongest during the winter season, which runs from December to March, while rainstorms are usually brief and occur at night. The islands are also busiest at this time of year. If you want to visit the islands during this time, we recommend planning ahead a few months.

Spring

By April, the rains have subsided, leaving behind lush greenery and gushing waterfalls. April, May, and June are ideal months to visit Hawaii because of the dry weather and peaceful surroundings.

Only US State with two official language

Hawaiian and English are two different languages. Some residents consider Pidgin to be an official language, however it is not. Although it may appear alien and is widely spoken here, Pidgin is not an "official" language.

Greet with hug, not handshake

Hawaii has a FRIENDLY characteristic: we greet each other with a hug. "I love you," "I'm sorry," "Nice to meet you," and "Thank you" are all expressed through hugging. Here, they adore hugging! So, instead of a handshake, don't be surprised if a native gives you a hug.

Tradition of sharing nature's bounty

When a backyard tree produces "too much" fruit, the owner takes a box to work, drops some off for neighbours, or gives it away to people who may appreciate it.

Largest Banyan Tree in the world

The famed Lahaina banyan tree, which was established in 1873 and is currently the largest banyan tree in the United States, was eight feet tall when it was planted.

Taxis

Taxis are not cheap. Everything is based on a metre, with a base price of $3.50 USD and an additional $3.50 USD every mile. If you can, avoid taking cabs.

Ferry

The only way to get from Maui to Lana'i is to take a ferry. You'll have to travel everywhere else.

Car Rental

While renting a car is not always the cheapest choice, it is the most convenient method to move around in Hawai'i.

Bus

In Hawai'i, buses are the only mode of public transportation (however buses are not available on Lana'i and Moloka'i). The most extensive transit system is on O'ahu, with good coverage and regular buses.
