Why to visit Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar Monastery is a symbolic salutation to the Buddhist community's spiritual beliefs. It is located in the Lahaul and Spiti valleys and has been designated as one of the world's hundred most endangered monuments.  

 

It is located at an elevation of 3,894 meters, offers a breathtaking view of the Spiti valley, and serves as a melting pot for various cultures and religions.

  • Dhankar Monastery was built around 1000 years ago and is also known as Dhangkar Gompa or Dhankhar. 
  • It was also known as Lha-od Gompa, after its founder and renovator, a well-known lama named Lha-od. 
  • This monastery is the main centre of Buddhist culture and houses a collection of thanksas dating back centuries.
  • The Vairochana statue, which consists of four figures of Buddha in the state of meditation, is one of the monastery's main attractions. 
  • Buddhist scriptures, Medicine Buddha murals, and protector deities can also be found here.  
  • It also has a small museum where murals and scriptures can be found.

How to reach?

Take a taxi from Manali to Kaza, then another taxi from Kaza to Dhankar Monastery, which is only 34 kilometres away. 

If you start your journey in Shimla, take a taxi to Kaza and then descend between Tabo and Kaza at Dhankar to reach the Dhankar Monastery.

It is best to take the bus or a private taxi from Manali to Kaza because driving can be dangerous. There are few ATMs in Kaza, and they may run out of money. As a result, tourists are advised to bring plenty of cash, as digital payment will not work in the mountains. You can also spot many beautiful Thangka paintings on the wall of this monastery.
