The Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the most energetic locations to visit in Varanasi and is based on an intriguing legendary tale in which Brahma (the universe's creator) sacrificed his ten horses.

History: 

  • The ghat is the subject of many stories and legends. 
  • It is said that Lord Brahma sacrificed 10 horses at Dashashwamedh ghat to welcome Lord Shiva to the world. Das is short for ten, Ashwa for horse, and Medth for sacrifice. 
  • The ghat was twice renovated in the eighteenth century. 
  • Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao is claimed to have sacrificed ten horses in this ghat in the second century.

At the Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Varanasi Ganga Aarti is performed. It starts each evening at 6:30 pm and is sponsored by the NGO Ganga Seva Nidhi. One of Varanasi's top attractions is the Ganga Aarti, in which hundreds of visitors and worshippers take part.
