Why to visit Saas Bahu Temple
The odd name of this temple complex is a corruption of the original name, Sahastra Bahu temples, which means Lord of One Thousand Arms. These temples, which date from the 10th century, are dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Attractions inside the Saas Bahu Temple:
- The attraction consists of two temples surrounded by a smaller shrine on a common platform.
- The temples, which face east, have brick shikhara that are now in ruins, a mandapa with open projections, and an open porch. They are examples of the later Maru-Gurjara architectural style.
- The temple's entrance is decorated with a cusped arch over four columns in the Torana style.
- The pillars, walls, arches, and roofs of the two temples are decorated with elaborate carvings that have earned them fame.
- Several of these carvings depict gods, while others depict mythological settings.
Interesting facts about Saas Bahu Temple:
- It is thought that King Mahipala's wife and daughter-in-law were devotees of Lord Vishnu and followers of Lord Shiva. Thus the Kachchhwaha king made the decision to construct two temples, one for each lord, side by side.
- The temple was known as Saas Bahu Temple because it was next to another temple and was constructed for a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. In Hindi, Saas is the word for mother-in-law, and Bahu is the word for daughter-in-law.
