Why to visit Tawang Monastery
One of Arunachal Pradesh's beauties is the Tawang Monastery, popularly known as the Golden Namgyal Lhatse. It is the world's second largest monastery, behind Lhasa, and is located at a height of 3,000 metres above sea level. The monastery, which is thought to be 400 years old, is in charge of 17 gompas in the area. It is a big mansion that houses more than 300 monks. It offers a spectacular perspective of the Tawang-Chu valley from its location amidst the Himalayan peaks. The huge 8-meter-high statue of Lord Buddha is one of the most outstanding sights in the monastic dwellings.
Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso built the three-story structure in 1860-61 to fulfil the demand of Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso, the 5th Dalai Lama. It belonged to the Gelugpa Buddhist sect and had a religious relationship with Lhasa's Drepung Monastery, which lasted during British control. The major temple, Dukhang, has excellent interiors with beautiful artwork, as well as sketches and paintings of Bodhisattvas on the inside walls. The library houses priceless historical scriptures such as Kangyur and Tengyur. All of the other important structures are built in the classic Buddhist style, which will make you swoon. The lively festivities held in the monastery are the cherry on top.
