Why to visit Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most well-known landmarks in the world. It is not only the world's largest steel arch bridge, but it also spans one of the world's most beautiful natural harbours. Locals call it the Coathanger, and it's an important element of the city; you can stroll or cycle across it, and even climb to the top for spectacular views.
The magnificent bridge was completed in 1932 after an eight-year construction period. It's made of 53,000 tonnes of steel and six million rivets that are driven by hand. On August 19, 1930, at 10 p.m., the two steel sides of the towering arch met in the centre of the bridge during construction.
Other interesting facts about Australia's renowned bridge include:
• The arch is 503 metres long.
• The highest point is 134 metres above sea level.
• The granite for the pylons was quarried near Moruya on the NSW South Coast.
• J.J.C. Bradfield, an engineer, is the bridge's father.
