Why to visit Vatican City

This small country has its own appeal, with historical and religious structures aplenty. In the year 326 A.D., the Vatican City was founded. During the reign of Pope Symmachus in the fifth century, the first palace was built to accommodate the increase in dwellings and people. Under the Roman Empire, the Papal States flourished and controlled a large portion of Italy.

However, after the unification of Italy in the eighteenth century, the Vatican became the last remaining Papal State. Following the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929, Vatican City was recognised as an independent state. The Vatican is now one of the most visited tourist places on the planet.

Special Tip

Early afternoon is the finest time of day to visit Vatican City's biggest tourist attractions. The rush remains minimal during this time, and the many historical and religious sites are less crowded.
