Why to visit Bar le Perchoir

A hugely popular new pub in Menilmontant, with a 360-degree view of the capital, has opened on a massive rooftop. Despite its'speakeasy' pretensions (the street entrance is unmarked), the bar is becoming a victim of its own popularity, with lines forming outside the front door before taking the elevator to the 7th level.

If you do make it up there, you'll discover a large space with a nice bar, cosy sofas strewn with pillows, and colourful plants and perfumed herbs put in pots around the seats or hung from the railings. It's truly something unique to watch the sunset over the Sacré-Coeur with a glass in hand and under garlands of coloured lights.

On the menu, you can order the drink of the day (€12), a slightly more expensive draught beer (€5 a half), or an imported bottled beer from Mexico or the Czech Republic. When it comes to wine, sharing a bottle saves money – but be careful, the bill adds up rapidly. Tapas are also available.

Special Tip

Come extremely early (5.30pm) or very late (10pm) for the best chance of gaining a seat – or, to be certain of that view, reserve a table in the restaurant on the penultimate floor of the building.
