Why to visit Kapleshwar Temple
Lord Shiva's temple, Kapaleshwar Mandir, is located in Nashik. This temple differs from other Shiva temples in that it lacks a statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva's Gatekeeper. The temple was where Lord Shiva atoned for his sins after taking a plunge in RamKund to wash them away. There is no statue in the temple to guard the Kapaleshwar Temple since Lord Shiva regards Nandi as a Guru or Teacher.
The temple is famous for depicting a storey about Lord Shiva making a mistake in the past. According to legend, Lord Shiva accidentally killed a cow. In order to wash himself of his act, he had to take a bath in the sacred Ramkund. He is thought to have travelled all the way to Nashik to execute the same rite. He sat down to meditate after taking a dip. On the same site where he sat to contemplate, the temple was built.
