Why to visit Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary
The Dampa Tiger Reserve, located deep within Mizoram's deep forests, is a fascinating wildlife refuge and one of the state's most popular tourist destinations, recognised for its diverse flora and fauna. Dampa, around 125 kilometres from Aizawl, is a naturalist's paradise. The sanctuary, which is located in the western part of the state, covers around 500 square kilometres and overlaps a small stretch of its border with Bangladesh.
Dampa got its name from the lonely bachelors (Dam Pa means "lonely men") who remained in the area after the bulk of the female population died. In 1994, the sanctuary was designated as a tiger reserve, and today it is host to a variety of creatures including Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Barking Deer, Indian Pythons, and a variety of birds. The bio-geographic route that links India to some parts of Malaya and China runs through the hills surrounding the wildlife sanctuary.
Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 127 kilometres from Aizawl, Mizoram's capital. The best method to get to Dampa from Aizawl is to hire a private cab.
