Why to visit Thiksey Monastry

Thiksey Monastery is a tibetan-style monastery on the Leh Manali route, 20 kilometres south of Leh. The twelve-story monastery sits on a hill, offering spectacular views of the town and the Indus valley below. The Maitreya Temple, which houses a 15-meter high Maitreya Buddha statue, is Thiksey's primary attraction. It is the largest statue of its kind in Ladakh, covering two levels of the building. Thiksey is made up of a slew of white structures built in a hierarchical sequence that contrast with the rocky golden brown hills.

Special Tip

It costs INR 10 for camera, INR 50 for recording video.
