Why to visit Saga Dawa

The Saga Dawa festival is one of Sikkim's most prominent festivals, held with great zeal in the capital city of Gangtok. The full moon day of the fourth month of the Buddhist calendar is commemorated by the Mahayana Buddhist tradition as the anniversary of Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and Nirvana. The day is known by several different names in India and overseas. Devotees commemorate the day in a variety of ways, including Saga Dawa. Processions, prayers, and almsgiving to the poor are all part of the festivities in Gangtok. The customs and rituals performed in honour of the Buddha are considered to bring fruit in the future for those who observe them.

Special Tip

Because it is marked on the full moon day of the fourth month of the Buddhist Lunar Calendar, there is no definite date on the Gregorian calendar for each. The Saga Dawa, on the other hand, usually takes place between April and June, and this is the best time to go.
