Why to visit Do Drul Chorten Stupa

The Do Drul Chorten Stupa, a well-known monument in Gangtok, is a worthwhile stop in the city. It was built in 1945-46 by Trulshik Rinpoche, the leader of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism, and has the typical 108 Mani Lhakor or Buddhist prayer wheels, which are said to grant wishes. The figure of Dorjee Phurpa or Vajra Kilaya is enshrined on the gilded summit of the stupa. A visit to this chorten, which is one of Sikkim's most important chortens, is a necessity if you want to comprehend Gangtok's cultural pulse. Because of its steepness, the trek to the top is a little taxing, but the views from the top are well worth it.

Special Tip

Tourists can hire cabs or use ordinary jeeps from Gangtok to get to this stupa.
