The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, one of Diu's oldest existing, was constructed in 1593. Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone was the saint's full name, but his father called him Francesco. He was an Italian Catholic evangelist who was eventually canonised as a saint on July 16, 1228 by Pope Gregory IX.
