Why to visit Tapovan Caves and Hills
It is mostly well-known for serving as a place of meditation (Tapobhumi) for Yogis and Saints in the past. Another adventurous location close to Deoghar is Tapovan Pahar. This location also has a number of caves in addition to the temple.
The Lord Shiva shrine Taponath Temple is perched atop a hill. Locals and pilgrims alike visit it frequently. There is a little kund (water body) below the hill, and it is said that Goddess Sita used to bathe there. Consequently, it bears the name Sukta Kund.
In the caverns of Tapovan, revered saints and ascetics including Maharishi Valmiki and Sri Balananda Brahmachari performed penance. Inside the cave are also preserved the skulls of the tigers that protected Balananda Brahmachari.
Down the hill, there is also a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Folklore has it that Lord Hanuman stopped Ravana's penance by using his tail to break a boulder, preventing Ravana from achieving enlightenment.
