Why to visit Tughlaqabad Fort

Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty and the king of the Delhi Sultanate in 132, constructed the now-demolished Tughlaqabad Fort in Delhi. The fort, one of the most exquisite examples of Islamic construction, is close to the Okhla industrial district.

The massive stone fort has walls that are 10 to 15 metres high. Battlement parapets and bastions cover the tops of the walls. There were originally intended to be 52 gates in the Tughlaqabad fort city, but only 13 still stand today.

History of the Tughlaqabad Fort:

  • According to legend, Tughlaq wished for the city-fort to be constructed by all local labourers. One of the workers, Nizamuddin Auliya, became enraged as a result and cursed the fort, stating "Ya rahey hissar, ya bassey gujjar," which roughly translates to "May the fort remain uninhabited, or else May herdsmen settle here."
  • It is thought that as a result of this curse, the Empire was unable to thrive, and the fort-city was soon abandoned.

Architecture of the Tughlaqabad Fort:

  • The ancient fort's architecture is divided into two distinct sections: the old city to the north and the area with the citadel and princely residences.
  • The entire structure is constructed of granite and has a 6 kilometer-long circumference.
  • The city of Tughlaqabad is now completely in ruins, but the southern portion of the fort, which contains the palace, royal homes, and public halls, still stands.
  • However, some of it has been renovated and is currently being encroached upon by the new community, particularly in the areas close to the lake regions.

Special Tip

Keep an eye on your pricey possessions, particularly mobile phones and cameras. Be on the lookout for impromptu monkey attacks on you, your food, and your possessions. Carry a stick for protection, but until they try to hurt you, stay away from them. Walking around in the intense heat of Delhi's summers will be uncomfortable without sunglasses or at the very least an umbrella.
