Jama Masjid, one of the top three sacred masjids in the world, is the biggest mosque in India. Devout Muslims visit this mosque to participate in religious rituals each festival and on Sunday. History of the Jama Masjid:

The construction of Jama Masjid Delhi began on Friday, October 19, 1650. Jama means "Friday" in Hindi. The masjid was built on orders from Shah Jahan, the fifth emperor of the Mughal Empire. It took six years and 5,000 skilled workers to erect the masjid.

Architecture of the Jama Masjid:

  • The Jama Masjid is an architectural marvel. There is no wood used in the entire structure. Finely ground white stone that has been sealed with strong, unbreakable lead water makes up the walls, ceiling, and floor of the structure.
  • Three white marble domes with black marble strips and gold-plated circular nails are on top of the masjid. The square has a big pool and can hold 25,000 people. Before worship, you should wash your hands and your face.
  • Once you reach the tower's top, you can take in the entire city's perspective. Muslims can pray in the direction of Mecca in the octagonal marble gazebo on top of the tower, which also serves as a distinctive representation of Islamic architecture.

The Eid celebration is when Jama Masjid is the most alive. During the month of Ramadan, the commotion on the streets of Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk intensifies ten-fold. Everyone receives iftar meals at the mosque, and a great deal of street food vendors set up shop. Take advantage of the delicious kebabs sold on the streets.

Special Tip
